And while the city is best known for its artistic contributions to the world, few are aware that it is also the birthplace of soccer. However, the soccer of 15th-century Florence was rather barbaric in nature. They called it calcio storico, and despite the bloodshed it incurs, locals still play it to this day.

Pope Francis is a verified social media saint. First off, his Twitter handle, @Pontifex, is the most retweeted account in the world (yes, that includes @KimKardashian). In fact, the pope’s tweets are so sacred that he has an entire social media team dedicated to maintaining his page. Now his social strategists have launched a papal news aggregation site, News.va. Oh, and of course they’re updating the pope’s app to bring the words of the Holy Father straight to Catholics’ smartphones. Basically, Francis, with some help, is winning the Internet right now.

In an age with instant communication at your fingertips and digital marketing on every platform, there are those who still get out messages the old-fashioned way, with a paintbrush and some attitude. They call themselves “wall dogs,” says one veteran of the trade, “because we are chained to a wall all day by our safety harness, and we work like dogs.” We spent a day with these blue-collar artists as they paint advertisements high above the streets of New York City.
