Sky Ferreira: "I don't want to be a costructed popstar"

She has not released her first album yet, due at the beginning of next year, but she is already famous: for her tracks published online and for having broken a substantial contract with a major record label. What is the Ferreira thought? "I don’t want to be a constructed popstar".

Interviewing Sky Ferreira, the twenty-one-year old singer who has become an It-girl in the US before even releasing an album, certainly arouses curiosity. When she was still a minor, she had the courage to break a contract with an important record label in the name of her artistic freedom.

And the American musician worked hard to get it. Her first success came thanks to the Internet: when she was just fifteen, she was noticed by a couple of Swedish producers, inspired by the music that the very young singer published online. Ferreira transformed into a phenomenon of the Web, exploring the various nuances of the electro-pop and grunge rhythms, from melodic to industrial.

The arrival of an offer from EMI seemed to be the realization of a dream. But, she says, "I felt like a puppet in the hands of others and I was not happy with that. I wanted to be myself, not the usual pop star". The break-up with the record label, that took place less than two years since signing it, led to various delays in the release of her first album, that should come out at the beginning of next year at last.
